KPA Unicon’s close collaboration with educational institutions includes internships, thesis writing and research activities. Working together with educational institutions helps KPA Unicon ensure that the company always has access to the latest scientific data. Internships also serve as a natural recruitment channel for young talents.
In 2017, Anna Korhonen was studying for an M.Sc. in Information and Knowledge Management at the Tampere University of Technology. She wanted to find a summer job in her hometown of Pieksämäki. Having grown up in the area, she was already familiar with KPA Unicon. She contacted the company directly and was offered a summer job.
Her internship duties were related to the updating of KPA Unicon’s quality management system to reflect the latest version of the ISO 9001 standard. The management system was successfully certified, and Korhonen also talked to her supervisor at the time about possible topics for her Master’s thesis.
The values of clean energy give meaning to work
During her internship, Korhonen gained a more in-depth understanding of KPA Unicon’s operations. She was impressed by the company’s values and commitment to clean energy. This inspired her to choose renewable electricity technologies as her minor. She felt it was important to pursue career opportunities in clean energy solutions. The title of her Master’s thesis was “The added value of hybrid power systems for the customers of an energy solutions supplier”.
“In practice, the thesis writing process involved face-to-face interviews with KPA Unicon’s existing and potential customers. It also gave me the opportunity to work together with everyone in the company. Managing Director Jukka-Pekka Kovanen was very supportive from start to finish,” Korhonen says.
“KPA Unicon puts a great deal of effort into anticipating customer needs. The thesis provided us with valuable insight into customer wishes concerning technological solutions,” Jukka-Pekka Kovanen points out.
“The findings of Anna’s thesis inform us about how and when we should invest in hybrid solutions. New technologies involve a significant amount of various R&D activities, and understanding the customers’ concrete wishes and goals is essential for these processes,” Kovanen adds.
